Step 2: Extra phone line and modem |
|
I have a
second phone line that is permanently hooked up to my computer for internet access. I paid my
phone company a connection fee of Aust$173. I also pay $20 per month for this service. I was
connected within a week |
|
Most computers these days have an inbuilt modem. My
computer has a 28.8 Kbps (kilobits per second) transmission speed modem. Helen's newer computer has a
56 Kbps modem, which is faster than mine. Speed is really important on the internet
because speed equals "your time". But, if you have a 28.8 Kbps modem, don't worry; I
have a 100-page Australian web site and a new US web site, both created and maintained using a
28.8 Kbps modem |
|
If your computer doesn't have an inbuilt modem, an
external modem costs between $99 and $400 |
|
Alternatively, there is the cable
modem, which uses the same wires as cable TV and is really fast or ISDN (integrated services
digital network) connections (not supported by all internet service providers at the moment) |
